This is our final episode of this week's shows with Zach Locke, a farmer educator and

author and the founder of Edible Ecosystem Design. Yesterday's act we kinda talked about

maybe a more intense tool, I suppose, certainly not for a farmer, but for a gardener, maybe

a two wheel tractor, might be a little bit much. If we're talking now in the world that

I love to play in, which is all sorts of different unique hand tools, I could talk with this

all day. I'm really curious what some of your favorites are.

Well, that's the great thing, you know, and first I just say, you know, hand tools are

the basic tool for every scale, right? So if you're working on, say, a small scale,

you use hand tools on a medium scale, hand tools, two wheel tractors, on a large scale, hand

tools, two wheel tractors and four wheel tractors, right? So what's cool about hand tools

is they are the base of interacting with our garden, right? And so thinking about that

base, that starts, one of my favorites is the Dibbler, because truly, was there any

tool that was used first other than, you know, a stick being shoved in the ground to make

a hole, you know, in some proto-human shoving in some food, you know, and hoping it grows,

right? So I just, I love a good Dibbler, and there's so many great ones out there, you

know, but it's one of my favorite, you know, and I'm a big garlic grow, or still, and

I used to grow a lot of garlic, and Dibbling was just key to making that an effective

operation.

Yeah, I've got a, I've got one I bought from Johnny's a while back, and it was $45, but

I still, I mean, that's kind of, I mean, I'll be honest, that's a little pricey for two

pieces of wood, but it is what it is. I love that thing, and I use it all the time, so
