In my mind's eye, I see it. Hundreds of United States Army soldiers in the mountain passes dressed in Army Blue, shoulder's shoulder, with a

new Mexican militia. Two years ago, aligned with a different country. Looking out into

the distance. They know what's coming, a large force. It could be three times their size.

At least twice.

Texas militia.

Cavalry.

Probably artillery.

Led by the state's governor, Peter Bell.

Absolutely committed to seizing Santa Fe,

the capital of this previously Mexican territory,

today part of the present-day state of New Mexico, which the state of Texas in 1850 claims.

From the Texas point of view, it's simple. They won this land from Santa Ana, and Peter Bell himself is a veteran who fought with Sam Houston at San Jacinto.

But the men in the mountains see it differently.
