Back around 1890, Charles Dudley Warner, who was editor of the Hartford Current, wrote in an editorial,

Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it. Well, maybe no one did at 1890, but someone definitely has since then,

our United States weatherman.

He's quite a busy gentleman who works for the Department of Commerce.

His job is to read thermometers, barometers, anemometers, and other assorted meters,

which forecast weather conditions so the rest of us will know what to plan or what not to plan,

like hanging out the wash or going to a baseball game.
