Summary

More and more European police forces are using facial recognition technology. Under an EU proposal they'd be able to share access to the millions of images they've collected – creating what critics say amounts to one of the most extensive biometric surveillance systems in the world. This week we speak to Domen Savič, head of Slovenian digital rights NGO Državljan D (Citizen D), about the tricky balance between fighting crime and protecting our privacy. We're also talking about Seville's plans to name its heatwaves and the French response to the US Supreme Court's abortion ruling. Plus, a recording of Dominic's doorbell disaster. This week's Isolation Inspiration: Bionic reading, Nicola Coughlan on Off Menu, DakhaBrakha, Jamala, Kalush and Go_A. You can check out Državljan D's monthly podcast on tech ethics here. Welcome back to the Europeans, the podcast that brings you up to date each week with what's going on around Europe.

And I am delighted to report, Dominic, that I have finally showered after spending the week, sleeping in a tent at Glastropery Festival.

0:35.3

Did you have fun? I mean, I'm kind of half

0:37.6

envious and half really glad it wasn't me when I see these pictures of people in these disgusting

0:42.1

tents for a whole week. You were there forever. It was so long. But yeah, it was amazing. The music

0:48.9

was great, obviously. And it was just really joyful to stand in a massive crowd and sing

0:54.1

along with thousands of really

0:55.2

happy people. We haven't done that since, you know, before the pandemic, so it's really emotional.

1:00.1

Also, there are some aspects of it, yes, that you would have hated, like the deep uncleanniness

1:04.9

of everything. But I did think about you a lot while I was there because every five metres or so

1:10.1

at Glastonbury, there was a stand

1:12.2

selling your favourite Cypriot cheese. The streets of Glastonbury are paved with Hulumi.

1:16.9

Oh, now I am jealous. I think it's your idea of paradise. What have you been up to when I've

1:21.6

been away living in a field? Oh, I've not been doing anything like as exciting as going to the

1:25.8

world's greatest music festival. I've

1:27.5

mainly been sitting around in the sunshine in my garden. It's been quite blissful, actually.

1:33.3

Well, that sounds a lot more peaceful than my week, at least, which is a nice thing. What have we

1:37.7

got coming up on the show this week? This week, we're going to be talking about the controversial

1:41.5

use of facial recognition technology. It's being used more and more

1:46.5

in Europe and actually all over the world, really. For some, particularly some police services,

1:51.9

it's a very exciting technology and is seen as a tool in fighting crime. But there are many

1:57.6

who are very concerned about it. People who see this as a technological tool that
