Summary

When Remco Yizhak Cooremans moved home to the Netherlands after many years abroad, the authorities told him something shocking: his son wasn't legally his son. This week, we hear about Dutch plans to bring the law up to date with the realities of 21st-century parenting. We're also talking about Roman trash and minimum wages you can actually live on. Remco is the chairman of Meer dan Gewenst. If you're interested in the multi-parenting law, you can catch him speaking at De Balie in Amsterdam on June 16, and it's being streamed online too. Details here. This week's Isolation Inspiration: Navalny, and Rough Translation's episode on France's forbidden desk lunches. We're taking a break next week so that Katy can go stand in a muddy field. While we're away, check out this beautiful episode from Belarusian poet Hanna Komar, reflecting on the meaning of freedom. Hello and welcome to the Europeans podcast coming to you from Groninger this week where my husband is for work and I'm crashing his hotel for a night to see him.

I think I've reached peak romantic in my relationship after crossing the country to visit him for the first time in two weeks

0:38.5

and then immediately asking him to leave the room as it's podcast recording time.

0:42.2

So beautiful of romantic. Thank you, Thomas.

0:45.1

Yeah, thanks. Sorry. How are you? Where are you?

I'm in Paris and it's very hot here and it's election season again. You might have thought

0:53.8

we were done with that after we re-elected Macron last month. But we're not done. We're electing a new parliament here in France, which is a fun opportunity for me to geek out over my first time voting a two-round parliamentary election. Fun times. Yeah, I really don't understand how this two-round parliamentary election works and we probably don't have time for you to explain it to me. But it seems really confusing. It is confusing but also really fun.

And the most important thing to remember is that in France, when you vote, you get a little stamp on

1:21.9

your voting card and it makes you feel like a child in school getting a gold star for doing something

1:26.3

good. It's very satisfying.

1:28.6

Anyway, France aside, what have we got coming up this week? Well, this week we're going to be

1:32.6

talking about a topic. We've been wanting to discuss for a long time now, and we're finally

1:36.9

getting around to it. It's the topic of multi-parenting families, families often with LGBTQ plus

1:43.3

parents who decide to co-parent with more than two parents.

1:47.6

Now, these kinds of families are becoming more and more common in certain parts of Europe, and

1:52.4

particularly in the Netherlands. And whilst it's becoming more common, that doesn't mean that the

1:56.6

law has caught up with recognising families with more than two parents. That could all be about to

2:02.8

change as the Dutch coalition government are expected to offer up a new multi-parenthood law as part

2:10.0

of a broader package of bills which should make life easier for rainbow families and prospective

2:16.1

rainbow families. And we've got the perfect person to speak to us about this topic.

2:20.4

Remko Yitzhak Koremans is the chairman of the Dutch Foundation for Rainbow Families,

2:25.2

Mir Dan Ghevenst.
