We’ll talk to psychiatrist Bruce Greyson, one of the world’s leading experts on Near-Death Experiences, about the research that led him to rethink his understanding of the nature of life, death, and the continuity of consciousness. We’ll explore the science behind how these experiences can provide comfort, heal past trauma, and even create transcendent experiences that help us make as much sense of our lives as of impending death. And we’ll also consider the bigger question of what NDEs suggest, if anything, about our understanding of reality.

0:00.0	A 25-year-old fellow was in the hospital with severe pneumonia, and the nurse who was
0:08.8	working with him was about his same age.
0:10.7	They were flirting a lot.
0:13.0	One day she told him she was going to be taking the long weekend off, and she took off, and
0:17.8	while she was gone, he had a respiratory arrest, had to be resuscitated, and had a near-death experience.
0:23.6	And in his near-death experience, he saw her, and she came walking towards him, and he said, you know, what are you doing here?
0:32.6	He said, Mom, I want to tell you that you can't stay here with me, but I want you to go back and find my parents
0:40.3	and tell them I love him very much,
0:43.3	and I'm sorry I wrecked the red MGB.
0:46.3	Now this happened in the 1970s,
0:50.3	and he was actually living in South Africa where there weren't a lot of MGBs.
0:58.5	But when he became awake again in his hospital bed,
1:02.6	he started telling this story to the first nurse that walked into his room,
1:04.8	and she got very upset and left.
1:10.5	And what happened was his regular nurse, who had taken the weekend off,
1:13.6	had done so to celebrate her 21st birthday, and her parents had surprised her with a gift of a red MGB.
1:18.6	When she jumped in, took her test drive and immediately smashed into a telephone pole and died.
1:24.6	Just a few hours before his near-death experience.
1:29.8	There's no way he could have known that she had died or expected that she had died.
1:33.9	She was a young, healthy person.
1:35.8	He couldn't have known how she died, and yet he did.
1:40.2	And we have case after case after case of this type of thing.
