Summary

If you’ve ever stood in front of a full wardrobe and still felt like you had nothing to wear, let me tell you, you are not alone.

I’m going to be really honest with you, I find deciding what to wear SO hard, not only do I never give myself enough time, but my neurodivergent brain makes it very difficult to visualise outfits beyond my go-to items, but at the same time I really want to be creative and enjoy getting dressed, and nothing makes me feel better than a great outfit!

So, I made it one of my new year’s resolutions this year is to be more intentional about my outfits, and find an easier way to do so when I’m busy and stressed. So I’ve gone down a rabbit hole and looked through all the advice from the experts, and I wanted to make is a busy girl’s guide to how to dress better, for all of us who get that wardrobe paralysis! I hope you love it.

What is up? I'm Grace Beverly and welcome back to Working Hard, the podcast shared guide book on how to improve your own life and achieve what you actually dreamed of doing, because life's too short for boring podcasts and bad advice.

0:25.4

What is up and welcome back to working hard? This episode is specifically for anyone who stands staring

0:31.6

at their wardrobe every morning and thinks what the fuck do I wear? Like why do I have multiple

0:36.1

clothes here and I don't know a single thing to wear?

0:38.4

I don't feel like there's anything here that expresses my personal style, and I'm annoyed about that very fact.

0:48.4

Firstly, I just quickly want to talk about why style isn't superficial. I feel like, as with a lot of things on my channel, I feel like

0:56.9

as soon as we start talking about, like, beauty and hair and nails are internalized misogyny,

1:03.7

really, and all of the kind of views we've had around that makes us feel like we're concentrating

1:10.8

on silly things or we're paying attention to

1:14.5

vapid kind of parts of our lives and I don't buy into that and I feel like we should actively

1:19.6

try not to buy into that because again it's a double-edged sword it's how we're seen as women like

1:24.6

we're expected to be quote unquote presentable and to look a certain way and to dress well and whatever it might be. And you can reject all of that if you want to, but if you want to concentrate on that, whether because it's something that you feel like you've been encouraged to do by external society or because you actually want to do that, you have a right to do that without then feeling vapid about it. But I generally feel like we're all told that clothes

1:44.6

shouldn't matter to how we feel or that your style doesn't reflect you or how you dress doesn't

1:48.7

reflect you. And I feel like we all think that clothes shouldn't matter to how we feel. But they

1:53.1

definitely do. And this is because of something psychologists call in clothed cognition,

1:56.7

which is basically a fancy word that says the way we dress directly affects how we think,

2:01.4

feel and behave. So what you wear influences everything from how confident you feel to how

2:06.6

assertive you are in a meeting to whether you even like leave the house in the first place.

2:12.0

I also think that this is a good place to start if you are struggling with motivation or your identity or your

2:20.0

self-confidence. And when you're focusing on things like that, if some of the bigger inner work

2:24.3

feels too much, then your wardrobe is actually a really good place to start. I think, again, we think

2:30.3

of style and we think of wardrobe as like a cherry on top or something that just happens to exist and isn't really important to our lives.
