Summary

Katie started her first homestead in a city lot, long before she acquired her 5-acre homestead, much less her current 240-acre property. For her, what it boils down to is being resourceful, and having the flexibility to learn how to be self-sustaining. Connect With Katie Krejci: Katie Krejci brings her experience as a dietitian and a homesteader together as "The Homesteading RD" where she helps others become more self-sufficient, cook from scratch, and enjoy wholesome REAL food. She recently moved from a 5-acre to a 240-acre homestead in the north woods of Minnesota with her husband where they have a large garden, raise their own egg chickens, meat chickens, tap maple trees, hunt, forage, and more! Katie grew up in the city, so she is self-taught (you can do it, too!) and loves sharing her knowledge with others via social media and her website. You listen to yesterday's episode, you may. You may have come away inspired and potentially a little bit intimidated to start a homestead

0:19.9

and certainly you do not need 240 acres, maybe even five. I mean I'm over here on

0:25.9

13,000 square feet which I use square feet because it's hard to say 0.29 acres and so it's

0:31.4

pretty small space but I'm kind of getting started myself. We have

0:34.8

Katie back on the show the home setting RD and you mentioned that the five acre

0:38.4

spot that you were in before you upgraded you've been in I guess for about 10 years or so prior to moving.

0:45.0

And I'm curious like how the homesteading journey started for you on that space.

0:50.0

Yeah, so what happened is we started with the gardens. I feel like that's kind of a natural starting place for a lot of people and when we moved into that homestead it was nice that there were a couple raised beds already, so I kind of had that starting space, but I am a big fan of in-ground gardens, and I feel like they're a really simple place to start.

1:14.6

And actually that's what I started with at our very first home

1:18.0

and just a little city lot.

1:20.0

I just took a shovel and I turned over the soil and I put seeds directly in the ground.

1:25.6

I probably had $20 in that garden and it did pretty good.

1:30.5

So it doesn't have to be this big intimidating process but yeah so we put in the

1:36.8

in-ground garden grew a little bit of food and thankfully there was already a chicken coop on our five acre homestead when we moved in.

1:46.0

And so within a year we got some chickens and got into incubating eggs and the rest of history.

1:53.4

Yeah, it was actually kind of fun.

1:55.4

So my first chickens, I got five adult chickens

1:58.9

from a friend of mine.

2:00.5

And he said, hey, I have a rooster. And so all these hens are currently going to be laying fertilized eggs. If you want to incubate them, do it right away. And so I did that, you know, the first eggs that I gathered, I threw in the incubator and we had chicks and it was just so much fun.

2:17.0

That's cool.

2:18.0

Yeah, I haven't gone the incubation yet.

2:20.0

I've gotten baby chicks and raised from there, mostly because I'm already at nine and we talk chicken math.
