Summary

Katie details the process of starting her 240-acre homestead from move-in to today. It started with two cabins, lots of land, and plenty of choices to make. While it has been an undertaking, it has been a manageable process as she and her spouse make do with what they have.  .Connect With Katie Krejci: Katie Krejci brings her experience as a dietitian and a homesteader together as "The Homesteading RD" where she helps others become more self-sufficient, cook from scratch, and enjoy wholesome REAL food. She recently moved from a 5-acre to a 240-acre homestead in the north woods of Minnesota with her husband where they have a large garden, raise their own egg chickens, meat chickens, tap maple trees, hunt, forage, and more! Katie grew up in the city, so she is self-taught (you can do it, too!) and loves sharing her knowledge with others via social media and her website. Imagine you have just closed on 240 acres and you're wondering how to start a homestead from

0:18.4

scratch. That is exactly what Katie Gracey is going through and probably has been maybe Katie for

0:24.6

the last four or five months or so since you've closed on the property.

0:28.0

Correct. And so I was thinking today we talked about like how you don't necessarily need this much space, but I also kind of want to go the opposite and say, what if you have the space or you're dreaming it out, planning it out in the future, and you need to know literally what to do and how to sequence, how to analyze the land,

0:45.6

figure out where to locate certain things.

0:47.6

So maybe we could just talk about how you're doing that as we speak with the property you're on now.

0:53.0

Yeah, absolutely.

0:55.0

It's been quite a journey and I kind of feel like we're just making it up as we go day by day

1:02.0

to carve out this homestead and make it work for us.

1:05.3

So what we inherited when we moved in here, this was just a hunting property.

1:11.3

So there's a main cabin here that's a thousand square feet that was

1:16.1

used for the main owners that work here there's a smaller kind of rundown cabin

1:21.6

with no water or anything it's a totally dry cabin and so

1:25.9

we had to figure out which one we were going to move into so the nicer cabin that was a

1:30.8

an easy win we were thankful that there was a structure here. We were

1:34.4

looking at a lot of other properties that were just raw land and so that makes

1:38.8

it a little bit more tricky on whether you know you're going to put a mobile home there and just kind of

1:45.1

live there till you build a house or there's some options there but yeah

1:50.0

thankfully the cabin is working out well for us.

1:52.5

So that piece was easy.

1:54.2

The hardest part was where are we gonna put all our stuff?

1:57.8

So at our previous five acre homestead,
