your actions. So I recently signed three of my kids up for rock climbing classes.

My five-year-old in particular climbs all over everything at home,

so I was imagining that he would enjoy it. And he did. He climbed to the top of the gym wall again and again, which is quite a big height for a little person.

Afterwards I noted how fearless he seemed.

That's when he told me that he was afraid of being up so high.

But, he said, he was in charge of himself and he could still climb even if he was afraid.

I absolutely love this and I'm not sure where he got this language but what a great philosophy for life.

We feel all kinds of emotions about things.

Fear is a big one of course, but there are others. Anger, irritation, sadness. We are

emotional creatures and it's pretty clear that our feelings drive the car much of the time.

We feel them in our bodies with our hearts racing our palms getting clammy. But we aren't just our feelings. And in the course of millions

of years of cognitive evolution, we have developed the ability to step outside that core emotional reaction and

examine it for what it is. In my son's case the wall was high but getting to the top also looked like a lot of fun.
