Hi, I'm Dave. I've been walking for fitness since 2013, averaging about 21,000 steps a day. I'm walking right now and would love to have you join me for the next 10 minutes.

January 2nd, 2013, I got my first Fitbit.

It was a little Fitbit zip.

The Fitbits were given to, or at least offered to all of the employees, where I work,

in an effort to help us pursue a healthier lifestyle, pursue fitness.

And we were offered not only a free Fitbit, but certain financial incentives if we reached a particular step count.

And on top of that, they set up a Fitbit group for all the employees who wanted to be a part of it, and there were prizes to the top three steppers every month.

And I was convinced that I was going to be, if not in the top three, number one,

because I was pretty active. I was a runner. I ran every day, ran three miles

every day. And I didn't know anybody else who was doing that. So I took my Fitbit with a little bit

of ego, strapped it on that first day, went for my run, and was shocked at how few steps

I actually got. Ran three miles, ended up with maybe 5,000 steps.

Pro tip, by the way.

You actually get more steps walking a mile than you do running a mile.

The reason is because when you run, your stride is longer,

so you need fewer steps to cover the ground.
