In a world where genres are so slippery and tricksy and hard to pin down, Anticon was a label in the hip hop realm which routinely defied definition. This week Pip sits down with one of the original crew members to chop it up about the good old days, as well as the present and the future - ladies and gentlemen, this week’s guest is YONI WOLF (aka WHY? - band and solo)!
Pip and Yoni share many mutual friends, influences and interests, and it seems mad that the two haven’t gotten together in the podcast huddle and recorded a chat before. Well - let history be righted as they finally crowbar in some good jibber jabber time to reflect on all sort of necessary goodness, including mic control, Pip’s relationship with the first cLOUDDEAD album (the group comprised of Why, Doseone and Odd Nosdam), the exclusivity of hip hop and the rap milieu of the time, the rest of the Anticon crew including the truly unfortunate passing of Alias, touring and the delights and non-delights thereof, his father’s messianic preaching and how he unknowingly introduced Yoni to rapping, his relationship to labelmate and mate-mate Doseone (who actually battled Eminem in the past - I kid you not), dealing with crohns and health issues, veganism, touring under three different presidents, his own podcast ‘The Wandering Wolf’, Meteor Festival and the controversies that surrounded it and rounded off with some ever resonant mental health talk.
