This episode is for Esther Troutman who wants to hear a story about the history of the yo-yo.

I've often said that when we look at history, we can think of it like a big picture,

a whole bunch of people's lives and events that fit together like a huge jigsaw puzzle.

Although all of history is like a puzzle, sometimes it's fun to pause and zoom in on a reoccurring

pattern of a particular object in the bigger picture. That's what we're going to do in this

episode. We're going to zoom in on a particular object that first appeared in history way back

about a thousand years before Christ. That object is the yo-yo. Of course it hasn't always been

called the yo-yo. Every time period and country had its own name for it. Anyway, to start our

story, we're going to travel a long way back in time. So I want you to grab my hand and hang on.

We do not want to get separated in our time travels. Okay, here we go. We've landed back

in ancient Greece. I've told you stories about these guys all the way back in episode 22.

These are the ancient Greeks that had a complex culture and held a huge influence on the cultures

and civilizations that followed it. There are artifacts and ancient Egyptian temple drawings

dated back to a thousand years before Christ showing objects that look like yo-yos. But

for this episode, we're going to start with the Greeks because there is plenty of evidence

that shows that the ancient Greek children had yo-yos made from metal and wood and even terracotta.
