Summary

A lot of new puppy owners wonder if it’s OK to use a pen in addition to or instead of a crate.

The idea of giving your puppy or young dog room to move around and play is a very appealing one.  BUT there are some drawbacks to giving them this extra space.

A emphasize using the crate because I believe it is an essential tool to have throughout your dog’s life.  A pen can be an extra accessory but we have to make sure that we are using it correctly.

In this episode I talk about:

  • The biggest difference between using a crate vs using a pen.
  • The drawbacks during potty training.
  • How to use a pen after potty training.
  • Three common follow up questions I receive when talking about using a pen.

Press play and enjoy!

You are listening to your new puppies podcast. Starting you and your dog off on the right paw. Here's your

0:16.8

host Debbie Salento. Hello and welcome to episode 77 of your new puppies podcast. I'm Debbie and today

0:35.2

we're going to talk about the difference between using a crate and using a pen,

0:40.9

also called an exercise pen.

0:43.5

Now, before we get into anything,

0:45.6

let's go over exactly what I'm talking about.

0:47.9

So the crate is the tool that I have talked about

0:52.1

throughout the entire podcast. I have at least three episodes on how and why to use a crate.

0:59.0

And you'd also be hard-press to find an episode that I don't talk about it at some point.

1:07.1

So it's that enclosure that could be plastic or metal or even fabric, and the size of it also depends on the size of your dog.

1:17.0

Now a pen is like a standalone gate.

1:21.0

It's usually made up of like different panels that you connect together and you can

1:25.6

make it into various shapes and it creates this enclosed area for your dog. It's kind of the equivalent of gating off a doorway and having a small

1:36.2

room for your dog. So the biggest difference between the two is the amount of

1:41.0

room your dog has and this is exactly why my clients usually bring

1:46.0

it up for me and why they really like the idea of using an exercise pen but but

1:52.2

that's the same exact reason why we can get into trouble.

1:57.9

So I'm not against using pens at all, but I do hesitate because there can be some drawbacks to it. But it's almost like if you

2:07.3

if you listen to my potty bell episode, it's like the same feeling that I have about that, where there's nothing wrong with it, but let's just make sure we're using it correctly and using it for the right reasons

2:19.2

Now just to be clear I see a pen as an additional tool. I don't see it as something that can replace

2:26.0

the crate. The crate I feel is essential and the pen is an accessory. In fact I'd talk

2:32.0

about in my crate training episode why you should never come
