Hello, I'm Sean Curran, and this is yesterday in Parliament from BBC Radio 4.

On Thursday, the 26th of June, the Prime Minister confirmed he was talking to Labour rebels,

who threatened to block his plans to change the welfare system.

Thursdays tend to be quiet in the House of Commons. There are no

standing room only events like PMQs. Many debates attract only a handful of MPs, hence the messages

sent to Labour members by the party whips. The first encouraged colleagues to come to the

chamber to support Sir Keir St, as he delivered a statement about

the G7 and NATO summits. The second, sent soon afterwards, told Labour MPs they must attend.

The messages did the trick and secured a respectable turnout on the government side.

In spite of that noisy welcome, there were still some empty seats,

meaning there was more than enough space for the political and parliamentary elephant in the room,

the prospect of a rebellion by one in four Labour MPs

over plans to make it harder for people

to claim the personal independence

payment, PIP, and to limit the sickness-related element of universal credit. Kirstama managed to segue

from foreign affairs to domestic concerns when he said the government was focused on delivering

national, economic and social security for the British people.

And he said there was a consensus on all sides about the urgent need to reform the welfare system.

We want to see reform implemented with labour values of fairness.
