Hello, I'm David Kornock, and this is yesterday in Parliament from BBC Radio 4.

On Thursday the 21st of May, the Chancellor Rachel Reeves came to the Commons to promise cheaper family days out,

part of what she called a Great British Summer Savings campaign, but her opponents

and the Speaker were rather underwhelmed.

On Tuesday, Rachel Reeves was loudly heckled by the driver of a white van at a petrol station

in Yorkshire.

Yesterday, a son of Lancashire had a go.

These backbenchers of either side are elected to this house to hear it first, not to be outside

a Morrison's petrol station, not to be on a bus, not doing it to TikTok.

The speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, crossed once again that MPs had been the last to hear the

news. Most of what Rachel Reeves had been the last to hear the news.

Most of what Rachel Reeves had to say did have a familiar air.

One reason perhaps the Commons was half empty,

but there were some surprises in her 10-minute speech.

I recognise that what matters for families is not just getting by,

but being able to enjoy time together without worrying about the next bill.

That is why I am launching the Great British Summer Savings Scheme to help families and support our hospitality sector.

So I can today announce a temporary cut in the rate of VAT on summer attractions from 20% to 5% over the summer holidays. She said this would benefit visitors to museums, theme parks and soft play areas.

After days of speculation about food price freezers and caps,

the Chancellor also announced cuts to import taxes on some basic foods and told

supermarkets to pass them on. There was help too for people who have to use their cars for work,
