Wednesday the 11th of June was Rachel Reeves' big day

and the Chancellor focused her announcements in the spending review

on the government's long-term plans.

Even though it's June and the sun was shining on Westminster,

inside the Commons Chamber there was something of a blizzard.

I am providing a cash uplift of over £4.5 billion a year

for additional funding in the core schools budget.

We are investing £7 billion to fund 14,000 new prison places, record investment for

training and upskilling. One point two billion pounds a year by the end of the spending review.

Rachel Reeves spent around 45 minutes on her feet ploughing through the figures, setting out the

day-to-day and long-term budgets for different government departments.

Many of the big ticket items, increasing defence spending, more money for free school meals,

a boost for nuclear power and that U-turn on winter fuel payments for pensioners had already been announced.

But the Chancellor still had details to reveal, including one thing she wanted to abolish the use of hotels to house asylum seekers.

We'll cut the asylum backlog, hear more appeal cases and return people who have no right to be here.

Saving the taxpayer a billion pounds a year.

There'd been reports of last-minute rangles with a vet Cooper over the home office budget

and with the Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rainer over housing.

But Rachel Reeves painted a positive picture of funding for promised new police officers
