Hello, I'm Susan Hume and this is the yesterday in Parliament podcast. Tuesday, the 8th of April,

was the Commons last day before the Easter recess and it was again dominated by anxiety over trade,

tariffs and steel. Since the global maelstrom over President Trump's tariffs and trade blew up,

the Chancellor and the Prime Minister have at least been consistent in their message.

I think we do need to have cool heads.

I think calm, collected response.

I think it is incredibly important to retain cool heads.

As well as a cool head, Rachel Reeves also had a promise.

Families who are worried about the cost of living, we have your backs.

And British businesses who are worried about what a changing world will mean for them.

We have your backs too.

But MPs were keen to know exactly how they had our backs

and what their cool heads were thinking of doing.

Speaking for the Lib Dems, Daisy Cooper offered Rachel Reeves a suggestion for protecting

British businesses from an international trade war.

Will the Chancellor and the government commit to a buy British campaign as part of a broader

national effort to encourage people to buy British

here at home.

The Chancellor felt individuals could make their own decisions about buying British, but she

didn't sound too keen on that as a policy.

What we don't want to see is a trade war with Britain becoming inward looking, because

if every country in the world decided
