Lockwood was forced to spend the night at Wuthering Heights due to the snowstorm outside.

He was shown to a room that the housekeeper said was rarely used, as Mr Heathcliff didn't like people staying in it.

He discovered a stack of old journals and scratched names on the walls,

Catherine Anshaw or Catherine Heathcliff, or Catherine Linton repeatedly. He read through one entry from the perspective of a little girl, describing herself and her friend Heathcliff, being punished and cast aside by her family.

As he fell asleep, Lockwood had a series of disturbing dreams,

one in which he imagined a church with an endless sermon that he could not escape,

and another in which he dreamt of a childlike figure,

tapping at the window, begging to be let in,

calling herself Catherine Linton.

Terrified, he breaks the window pane and wakes up screaming.
