There's a common misconception that the far side of the moon, often called the dark side of the moon,

never receives sunlight.

This is not the case. At some point in the lunar year, every part of the moon is illuminated.

The far side of the moon is only dark to us on Earth, for it's tidily locked to Earth,

meaning, with little variation, only one side of the moon ever faces us. All six crude missions landing people on the Moon touched down on its near side.

This has led to a variety of conspiracy theories that there may be unexplained structures or even alien civilizations

hiding on that far side.

But here we have another common misconception.

Probes and crude missions have orbited the moon before and have viewed the far side

of the moon.

Apollo 8 in 1968 was the first time humans laid eyes directly on it,

though conspiracists will dismiss such evidence simply by suggesting, as they love to do,

that NASA suppressed their findings. Harder to explain a way as the further fact that

other countries have seen the far side of the moon as well. The Soviet

Luna 3 probe was the first to photograph it, resulting in the first complete Atlas of the Moon.

And in 2019 and 2024, China launched two different robotic spacecraft to the far side to explore
