but it continues. And it continues in a way that is, I think, inevitably rather repetitive,

more repetitive perhaps than almost any other issue we've puzzled over together over the last few years.

The idea that the facts are going to change with enough speed and profundity to effect

or to compel us to change our minds is clearly not the case.

It may have been at the outset. There may have been things that could have happened

that would have turned the story upside down. But it is, it's a grind, isn't it now? It's a simple grind coupled with a degree of dismay when you look in the rear view mirror and I think an absolutely compulsory sense of hope when you look at the road ahead and that may deserve

to get filed under naivety but right now I think hope is probably the most important thing for

us all to cling to sounds a bit strong but just just feel you have to feel hope if you

don't feel hope the only alternative as that classic line in the John Cleese film Clockwise reminds us, the only alternative is despair. And I do feel hope. I mean, you do as well. It is going to end. The question is, of course, how much damage will be done to us and how many people will we lose before we begin to emerge?

But it really did hit me this morning, and I'm not entirely sure why.

Something about Mondays probably, and a particularly restful and yet productive weekend.

I just woke up with a bit of a spring in my step, but also with that feeling you have occasionally that actually you don't have to do things the way that you did them last week.

You don't have to do things the way that you did them last year. During the time that we spent together, and goodness knows, we are moving into, to, well, we're firmly entrenched, aren't we, in unprecedented times at the moment.

I don't think the time we spend together has ever been quite like this.
