Summary

From Ireland to Croatia, the cost of housing has been shooting up across this continent, leaving rising numbers of people homeless and millions struggling to pay the rent. This week Amsterdam city geographer Cody Hochstenbach, whose new book Uitgewoond argues for a revolution in housing policy, is here to explain how we ended up in this mess — and what we might do to fix it. We're also talking about Spanish orcas, lost teeth, and a Europe without Facebook and Instagram. You can read El País' long read on the changing face of Spain's drug trade here, and check out Bruno Le Maire's unsmiling mug shots here. I just had my appointment to get my French passport and identity card, which is very exciting, as a new French citizen.

0:32.8

But it was a very classic French administrative encounter, I would say.

The lady who was dealing with my application took one look at my passport photo and said,

0:43.9

No, it's not, sa va-pa.

0:45.3

And I said, what do you mean? What's wrong with them?

0:47.2

And she said, you've got a French.

0:49.4

I said, I know I have a French.

0:50.6

What's wrong with that?

0:51.2

On the government website, it says you're allowed a fringe if it's not in your eyes.

0:55.1

To which she replied, I don't really care what it says in the government website. The person in front of

0:59.4

you is saying that you're not allowed a fringe in your eyes. You're going to have to centrepart it.

1:03.6

Go back to the photo machine and take new pictures. Whoa. I mean, to be fair to her, you do often have your fringe in your eyes.

1:11.8

I'd recently cut it. Also, I look horrible with the centre parting. I look like Kim Jong-un.

1:18.4

And now I'm going to look like that on my French ID for the rest of my life.

1:22.5

Oh, God, that's awful. I'm really sorry for you. I think we should like be fair to French bureaucrats

1:29.2

and point out that like most bureaucrats in every country I know about for passports are really

mean about passport photos. It's true. It's not a French exception. How are you? Are you over your

bout of the C word yet? Yeah, I'm pretty much recovered now. Even have my birthday this weekend, which was a bit strange in times of corona, but you know.
