And I'm Antonia Dodge. Stories are based in conflict.

A great story, if you watch a movie or read a book,

you've got conflict at the core of what moves the plot along.

It's what develops the characters.

It's really the thing that makes watching a story or

reading a story or listening to a story or hearing a story. Interesting is the

conflict between the characters and how they're growing and how they're

changing and overcoming obstacles. I really feel bad

for Hollywood these days because you know the underpinning of a great love story for for example, is conflict between two people often that can't seem to reconcile.

Now, often we don't see stories in a mature relationship. It's very rare the Hollywood produces these they do

often most of our love stories are two people finding and falling in love with each

other and the conflict that's pointed to is the things that keep them from that happening.

So the conflict is them not being able to get together in some way.

And in the past, there's basically two kind of devices that I think storytellers use

when you're talking about a romantic story there's the we'll call it the Romeo

Juliet story where you have two Starcross lovers that want to fall in love with each

other and something outside of themselves,

external circumstances, keep them apart.

It's something that their families don't get along or their different social classes, whatever. They can't seem to get

together and it's a challenge. The struggle is trying to get past all these external

markers. And then we'll look at a different one which let's call the pride and prejudice love story
