My name is Dick, and I'm an alcoholic.

I'm a buddy, but for the grace of God and the actions of AA and sponsorship, I've been sober since September

the 15th, 1965, and I'm very pleased about that.

The key to sobriety, in my mind, and has been ever since I first came into Alcoholics Anonymous,

was the fact that I had a sponsor, that I had somebody from the very beginning to be able to translate AA for me because I

didn't understand AA. I came to Alcoholics Anonymous because I had what I viewed as a problem with alcohol.

If I had viewed that I'd had a problem with something else, I would have gone to something else.

But I viewed that I had a problem with alcohol, and so I came to Alcoholics Anonymous.

And when I came to Alcoholics Anonymous, much to my amazement as I look back on it now,

I attended my first AA meeting in a September evening in Silver Spring, Maryland.

I walked down the steps to that meeting, and there was about 90 people in the room,

and it was equally divided into two groups.

I was in one, and they were in the other.
