This week on the show we're talking about careers, our relationship with our career or our job or what we do in life to make money or to create value.

I think the first time I was introduced to the idea of a career was when my grandfather, my father's father, retired from his career when I was probably

about four or five. I remember it being kind of a big deal. I have vague memories of this but I remember him getting a lot of

congratulations from the people he had worked with and he had been at this job

he had fought in World War II and when he had come home from the war the company that he was

employed in before the war told all the young men that if you go fight in the

war you will have a job when you come back. It was it like a power company in the

local area and he was I think in the local area.

And he was, I think, in the accounting department.

He came back from World War II, 1945,

and got a job right away, like was promised.

And he worked there from 1945 into the early 1980s. So this was like 35, 40 years,

like a big long span on doing math in my head, but it's like almost 40 years I think.

He was at this job this career

doing the same thing day in and day out his entire his entire working life and

remember he was also in the military I think he's in the Reserves and every summer he would take his two weeks of vacation and he would go and he would serve in the reserves, the Army Reserves in the state of Pennsylvania and that would be his vacation time.

That's what he did year in and year out for almost 40 years.

He retires, he gets some gifts from the place he was employed, people that he worked with,

congratulate him, and the family says well done, you've retired, now it's time to enjoy your retirement years and that was pretty much the extent of what I understood to a career to be as a young man.
