was begun in the mid 19th century in Britain. The word was actually coined by a gentleman named

George Holyoke. George Holyoke was an atheist and activist and a very strong promoter of

democratic rights and he basically was a champion of working class,

amelioration and improvement. So he founded secularism actually as against atheism, not against

religion. This is what's little known and that is to say it was a movement that was meant to be

inclusive of believers and non-believers as well. And the main premise was they put aside

the question of the deity and supernaturalism and metaphysics in general and said these questions

are not our issues, our issues are the improvement of conditions in this life, this is what we're

concerned about is this life. And so it was there was a bit of a split then between two camps

of secularism one was was headed by George Holyoke and then there was another camp headed by Charles
