Recently while in Rome, Bishop Barron gave a jubilee address to Irish pilgrims in which he looked

at great figures of the Old Testament and examined what it looks like to be called out of

oneself into radical self-gift.

Enjoy.

Good morning, everybody.

0:33.6

Can you hear me okay with my Chicago accent?

0:40.6

Listen, it's not the Red Sox, it's the White Sox. I'm a Cub fan. The Pope is a White Sox fan, and that is a deep divide. That's true.

Hey, listen, everybody, I am delighted to be with you. I was invited to speak to all the American young people tonight, but then your good bishops approached me and said, would you mind coming over in the morning and talking to the young people of Ireland? And I was happy to say yes. I'll tell you one reason is Ireland runs in my blood. So I'm all Irish. My mother's family came from Dublin,

Barron. I really mean that. I want to send you forth today with that spirit of St. Patrick

1:45.1

to revive the faith in Holy Ireland. So for all those reasons, happy to talk to you.

1:50.5

Can I, what I'm going to do today briefly with you is look at three Old Testament figures

1:56.4

that I think speak powerfully about mission and call and the purpose of life.

2:02.6

I'm going to begin in a perhaps surprising place with the last line of the book of judges.

2:09.6

So when you get back, if you have access to your Bible, pick up the book of judges or go on your phone,

2:14.6

and look at the last line. Here it is. In those days, there was no

2:21.1

king in Israel. So all the people did what was right in their own eyes. Can I tell you,

2:30.4

that's a recipe for disaster in terms of the Bible.

2:34.7

The Book of Judges is the most brutal book in the Bible, and that's saying a lot, given

2:39.8

how honest the Bible is about human sin.
