Summary

Merry Christmas! In today's episode, Bishop Barron walks us through the second chapter of Luke's Gospel, which recounts the birth of Jesus. As we see, this story is far from a safe, charming fairy tale. It tells the story of a new king, one who rivals the kingship of Caesar Augustus at every turn. A listener asks what St. John of the Cross meant by "the divine sweetness."

0:14.7

Barbara residents is Bishop Baron. Bishop Baron, great to talk with you.

0:18.6

Hey Brandon, how's it going? Hey, it's going good, but more importantly, how are you doing?

0:23.4

You've just gone through a really difficult last few days here. Tell us all about it.

0:28.9

Yeah, and it's still ongoing. We're having this bad fire out here in California, the Thomas fire.

0:33.9

And it takes that name ironically from Thomas Aquinas because the fire began near Thomas Aquinas

0:39.1

College, which is in my region. And Thomas Aquinas College is a good, long way from Santa Barbara.

0:44.6

So when the fire broke out, we weren't, you know, too concerned about it ever reaching our

0:49.1

part of the world. Well, it just continued to grow. And it's caused great damage and Ventura,

0:54.8

which is also a big city in my region. And then it continued to creep up the coast to

1:00.6

Carpentaria, a lovely little town. And it was doing some serious damage there. And then yesterday,

1:06.5

it reached Montecito, which is right next to Santa Barbara. And we began getting the evacuation

1:12.0

notices. So I left yesterday and I came down here to LA. I'm at the cathedral right now.

1:19.3

My hope is to go back in about day and a half. I've got a Guadalupe mask up in Oxnard,

1:25.5

which is in my region. But it's just very bad at the moment. The atmosphere is terrible.

1:31.2

It's very hard to breathe. Everyone has to wear a mask when they go outside. But then there's

1:36.2

the direct concern about the flames themselves coming into the neighborhood. So I'm praying right

1:42.3

now that the winds blow the right way and it doesn't destroy the city. But it's a little

1:49.1

hairy right now. We're recording this on December 11th. So we're hoping and praying, especially to

1:55.4

say Barbara, that things clear up over the next few days here. But you were just telling me,

1:59.5

I asked you, were there any buildings or parishes within your region that were specifically affected?
