where every two weeks we delve into worlds light and dark of America's Gilded Age,

France's Belle-Puck, and England's late Victorian and Edwardian eras.

There's something about snowstorms in New York City, the ones we now never seem to see,

with whipping winds swirling snow, obliterating everything in sight,

piling mountains of snow on sidewalks, only then to clear

with the same old, grimy cityscape somehow changed and revealed as something polished and new

and full of possibility. It was in the midst of just such a storm in the winter of 1942 that

Library on 79th Street after a few hours of research to try to make his way home through the storm.

As he arrived at the curb, he found an older woman. The two things he noticed

were her fine sable coat and her bright blue eyes, perhaps made even brighter against the snow.
