Vitamin deficiencies affect your overall health, but will your blood test detect them?

CBC - Complete blood count (measures red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, and iron)

BMP - Basic metabolic panel (measures all basic organ systems and a few nutrients)

Neither of these tests will actually detect all of your nutritional deficiencies. What’s happening in the blood is not happening inside the cell.

Classical nutritional deficiencies - Severe deficiencies like scurvy, rickets, pellagra, or beriberi

Subclinical nutritional deficiencies - Could relate to repair, longevity, or protecting the immune system

Subclinical vitamin deficiency symptoms:

 • Vitamin A - Problems with night vision

 • Vitamin D - Low back pain

 • Vitamin E - Weak muscles

 • Vitamin K1 - Bruising

 • Vitamin B1 - Anxiety

 • Vitamin B2 - Cracked corners of the mouth or lips

 • Biotin - Problems with your nails and hair loss

 • Vitamin C - Bleeding gums and fatigue

How to test nutrient deficiencies: Use a blood test that evaluates these nutrients off of your lymphocytes. A company called SpectraCell specializes in this.

Welcome to the Dr. Berg's Healthy Kito and Interminute fasting podcast, where Dr. Berg takes you on the journey for the truth about getting healthy and losing healthy weight. So the question today is will your blood test actually reveal your

0:48.8

vitamin deficiencies? A lot of times when you go to the doctor, they'll do a CBC, which is a complete blood count,

0:56.2

which they measure how many red blood cells and white blood cells you have, the hemoglobin,

1:02.0

the iron, and then you may get something called the basic metabolic panel,

1:06.7

which measures a lot of things, all basic organ systems, a few nutrients.

1:12.4

They might check iron, b12, sodium, chloride, calcium, maybe potassium.

1:18.0

And in your mind you're thinking, well, this is going to evaluate all my nutritional deficiencies.

1:22.0

Not quite, because what's happening? this is going to evaluate all my nutritional deficiencies.

1:23.2

Not quite, because what's happening in the blood or the serum is not happening inside the

1:29.5

cell.

1:30.5

And if we take magnesium, for example, 99% of all the magnesium in your body is inside the cell, it's called

1:37.8

intracellular. And if we take potassium, it's 98% of potassium is inside the cell.

1:44.4

That means only 2% of your potassium is inside the blood.

1:48.0

So only 1% of magnesium is in the blood, which really does not give the true picture.

1:53.0

And there's two things I want to differentiate.

1:55.0

Classical nutritional deficiencies,

1:58.0

which would be like severe vitamin C, vitamin D,

2:02.0

vitamin B3, or B1, like scurvy or rickets or polygera or berry,

2:07.0

a lot of times you don't see those anymore.
