What do you think is the largest source of sugar in our diets? In this video, that’s exactly what we’re going to talk about.

The largest source of sugar in the American diet is soda or soft drinks. An average American consumes 45 gallons of soda per year. This comes out to about 20 pounds of sugar.

The 2015-2020 dietary guidelines for Americans:

No more than 50g or 12 tsp. of added sugar per day (That adds up to so much sugar)

Most of this sugar is in the form of high fructose corn syrup or beet sugar, which are both very oxidizing and are GMO. About half of these two types of sugar is fructose, and the other half is glucose. The fructose is forced on the liver, which can lead to a fatty liver and insulin resistance.

The American Heart Association maximum added sugar guidelines:

For women - 6 tsp.

For men - 9 tsp.

0:51.0

0:55.0

You guessed it. It's soda. Or shall I say liquid candy?

1:00.0

An average American consumes 45 gallons of soda per year.

1:07.0

That's 375 pounds of soda.

1:11.0

It comes out to 470 cans of soda. It comes out to 470 cans of soda per day. Now I don't I haven't worked out the

1:16.6

math if it's a 12 ounce or a 20 ounce because of a 12 ounce which is this size right here, that's 9 teaspoons.

1:26.2

If it's a 20 ounce, it's 15.5 teaspoons.

1:29.9

And that gives us 20 pounds of sugar.

1:32.6

But this is only a very small amount

1:34.8

compared to the average total sugar

1:37.4

from all the foods that people eat,

1:39.5

which comes out to about 145 pounds. But 20 pounds of that is soda, which is quite interesting, especially in the younger generation.

1:49.0

Now I remember growing up in a small town in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

1:54.7

And we would go to this place, and we would have parties in the neighborhood all the time.

2:00.3

And we would go to this place called Beer Pop and Water Stop where they actually had just cases of

2:06.7

soda and we would buy cases of soda. This is before they had Hypertest Corn syrup but still

2:11.5

it was a lot of sugar.
