Summary

Tomorrow MPs will vote on Rachel Reeves’ decision to cut winter fuel payments for pensioners who aren’t eligible for pension benefits. We spoke on this podcast on Friday about the pressure that Labour is under from all sides on this, but the temperature has increased over the weekend with the trade unions getting involved. What's the latest?

Also on the podcast, there have been some allegations of 'dark arts' during the first round of voting in the tory leadership contest, and possible vote sharing. Is there any truth to these rumours?

James Heale speaks to Katy Balls and Fraser Nelson.

Produced by Oscar Edmondson.

co. UK. Hello and welcome to Coffey House shots. I'm James Heel and I'm joined today by

Katie balls and Freys and Nelson. Now Katie at momento is growing behind the

rebellion on Winter Fuel Allowance. The numbers reported in the Guardian today as being up to 50 the So you've had Liz Kendall, the work and pension secretary calling around MPs.

As I've reported Rachel Reeves was meeting with MPs last week to try and explain to them

0:49.2

effectively why she thinks she needs to do this cut and to put it into the context with a wider economic

0:54.6

picture which she's saying is pretty difficult and you know I think the sense that this is one

1:00.4

difficult decision but there's more coming in the budget and then actually the spending review next Easter is probably going to be perhaps the most uncomfortable of them all, given those 19 billion pounds of cuts already priced into that.

1:10.7

So I think there's a general effort from the government to try and bring

1:14.0

MPs on the side while also trying to make clear that perhaps this is just the taste of things

1:20.2

to come. Not the most appetizing message to lend, but of course as you say the

1:24.3

rebellion is heating up because you have the TUC so the Trade Union Congress this

1:28.8

week and the unions have started to come out and say this is a cruel cut, Kirsdamah, you need to change course.

1:34.2

Kirskamah is giving a speech at the TUC, so you can imagine some of the unions

1:38.3

and they're really trying to press that point to him when he is when he is there and then you have

1:44.8

you had an early day motion last week with some new labor MPs on it who designed

1:49.1

it saying you know suggesting a rethink is Rachel Reeves about to have a rethink? Well, she's appearing for the

1:55.3

P.L. later today in the weekly Monday meeting the Labour Party has. So clearly it's going to have a message

2:01.9

to them. You can expect a few tricky questions, I would imagine,
