Summary

Talking points: masculinity, mental health, friendship

Short but important one, team. I'm sure you've seen the memes that go something like "Is the cure for male loneliness pickleball?" Maybe you've rolled your eyes at them more than once. I have.

Nevertheless, the data is clear, and a lot of men out there are starved of quality friend time. Here's how to change that.

(00:00:00) - Intro and why friendships are so important

(00:02:11) - The challenges, and tips to overcome them

(00:05:05) - The value of reciprocity and shared interests

(00:10:00) - Conflict is a part of it

Today, we're going to be talking about male loneliness, the rise of it,

0:15.2

and why you probably need more male friends.

0:18.6

How to actually get that done?

0:20.1

How do you actually accomplish that? So in a

0:22.3

recent piece of research, I think about a year and a half ago, researchers found that men between

0:26.7

the ages of 18 to 30 are spending on average 6.6 hours alone per day. Now this is up about an

0:36.3

hour and a half more from four years before and is much higher

0:39.9

than it was in decades prior. And so on average, men, especially younger men, but also older men,

0:46.7

when you look at the data, are spending more and more time by themselves. Now, of course,

0:51.7

many of you are sitting there thinking, well, I like spending time by

0:55.2

myself. I like solitude. I also like being self-sufficient. You know, I enjoy my life the way that it is.

1:01.6

And sometimes other people can be a pain in the ass and they can be irritating. And I get all

1:06.7

that. But the reality is that we need friendships. We need socialization for the optimal mental

1:14.5

and emotional health in order for us to share life with. And the truth is that many men are

1:20.0

lonelier than ever before. And you can see this in the data, not just in the amount of time

1:23.7

that they're spending together. But when you look at the data around friendships, you'll see that

1:28.2

roughly 15 to 20% of men cannot identify a close friend or a best friend. You might not even feel like

1:36.2

you have anybody in your life that you can talk to when things are going south or to get some

1:40.8

advice from or some guidance from. And that may have inadvertently been something

1:44.9

that you did intentionally. Or it might be something that you did unintentionally. You know,
