Welcome to Rates and barrels. It's Tuesday, September 17th, Derek and Riper,

0:18.4

Inoceris, Britteroli, here with you on this episode. We discuss AL and NL Rookie of the Year awards and how they should be different in the future.

0:26.5

I have a proposal that I'd like to run by Eno and Britt that I think would be a win-win for all parties involved.

0:33.1

We'll see if that idea actually could get some legs.

0:36.3

We had a story from Andrew Baggerly of the Athletic earlier this week about the unusual path to Matt Chapman's extension with the Giants and what that might mean for Farhan Zadis' future in San Francisco and time permitting. We're going to take a look at the Orioles. They haven't been the same Orioles throughout the second half of the season. We'll try to dig into why that has been the case. But with a heavy rundown, we're going to get right at it. I'm going to make this very simple. I think the AL and the NL rookie of the year awards need to be split. I think we need to have a hitter award and a pitcher award in each league for each rookie class.

1:12.8

I think you could also make an argument to even split the pitcher one against starters and relievers.

1:17.7

You could have six rookie of the year awards.

1:20.1

I think there are some people at home punching air right now because that's it.

1:23.1

Everybody gets a trophy.

1:24.5

Yeah, nobody needs a rookie reliever award.

1:27.4

Come on.

1:28.2

That's my B proposal.

1:29.4

My A proposal is just to split it, hitter and pitcher.

1:32.5

But I think you could justify a reliever one.

1:35.1

We'll push that aside for now.

1:37.4

Simple first question, Brit, have I lost my mind?

1:40.4

Or is it actually a good idea?

1:42.1

Considering the differences between the way hitters and

1:45.0

pitchers are developed. We ask them to do different things. The timeline for pitchers is often

1:48.7

different, right? So we have guys that come up early in the season. We have guys like Paul Skeens

1:53.0

where they're trying to massage the workload to make sure he gets everything that he needs

1:57.2

all year with most of those innings backloaded in Pittsburgh. We have some guys that have no restrictions at all.
