In the time it takes to get to work. I'm Jeff Parrott. It is perhaps the most backwards,

0:15.8

absurd, an unsettling thing to consider. The Son of God, the king of kings, the Lord of the Sabbath,

0:24.8

the fulfillment of every promise God's people hoped for, Jesus, was lying dead in a tomb.

The historical reality of Jesus' burial is like a haunting sequel to his horrific death on the cross. It's so haunting that we

0:40.2

don't always know what to do with it. At least Good Friday has something good to celebrate as Jesus

0:46.1

takes our place in sacrificial love. And of course, Resurrection Sunday is the glorious victory over

death that rings over our lives and all creation into eternity.

In Dostoevsky's novel, The Idiot, there's a painting that portrays the dead body of Jesus lying in the tomb.

The image looms over the development of the narrative. Its depiction of

Jesus is so disturbing that one of the characters asked this question, if Christ's disciples had seen

such a body, how could they possibly have believed that he would rise again? It's a powerful question.

1:25.8

It's a stark acknowledgement of that backwards, absurd, and

1:29.5

unsettling nature of Jesus lying dead in a grave. In response to seeing the painting of Jesus'

1:36.5

dead body, another character in The Idiot exclaims this, that picture, why a man's faith might

1:43.1

be ruined by looking at that picture. It's a harrowing line,

1:47.3

isn't it? But it's also honest. There's something powerful, something necessarily unnerving

1:53.4

about the burial of Jesus. His descent into death is so raw that one might wonder if it could

2:00.7

ruin a person's faith.

2:02.4

How is it possible to see and appreciate the burial of Jesus, but in a way that doesn't

2:08.5

bury your faith? Is this burial something that we should bypass, or is it more like a reality
