0:00.0 | So today we're going to talk about why your urine may give off a strong ammonia odor |
0:27.1 | when you're on keto. |
0:28.7 | Now ammonia is the byproduct of protein. |
0:31.5 | Now what normally should happen is when you consume protein, some of it goes to the tissues, |
0:36.9 | some of it is used as fuel, and the rest goes through waste, through your urine, okay, |
0:42.1 | as urea. |
0:43.2 | So ammonia is the intermediate step between protein and urea. |
0:48.5 | Now if you have liver damage, let's say you have cirrhosis, this cycle here gets interrupted |
0:54.0 | and you start building up too much ammonia, and that can back up in the blood and be very |
0:58.2 | toxic. |
0:59.2 | However, there is another condition where you can have ammonia in the urine, and it's |
1:02.6 | not toxic. |
1:04.3 | And here's why. |
1:05.8 | Acidic urine triggers the production of ammonia, and I'll put a link down below, but when |
1:10.7 | your blood becomes slightly too acidic, you trigger the production of ammonia. |
1:16.8 | Sometimes up to 5 to 10x, and why is that? |
1:21.0 | Because ammonia is extremely alkaline, it's 11.7. |
1:25.6 | So neutral is 7, as you go lower, becomes more acidic, as you go higher, becomes more |
1:31.4 | alkaline. |
1:32.4 | Now just to give you more reality on the pH scale, 7 is neutral, 6 is acidic, 8 is alkaline. |
1:40.3 | When you go from 7 to 8, 8 is 10 times more alkaline, and 6 is 10 times more acidic, so |
1:50.6 | it's by a power of 10. |
