Summary

In this episode, host Colleen Patrick-Goudreau dives into the complex but crucial task of understanding why people vote the way they do—and what that means for how we advocate for animals. In it, she

  • shares insights into the psychological differences between conservative and progressive mindsets
  • explores how these perspectives shape beliefs and actions
  • and discusses how we can use this understanding to refine our message for animals

She looks at ways to engage with people whose views and choices may challenge us, all while prioritizing our mental well-being and staying true to our values.

By understanding the stories people tell themselves and the fears and values that drive them, we can communicate more effectively, craft impactful campaigns, and create meaningful, lasting change for the animals and the causes we care about.

I lost Charlie, our cat Charlie. On November 9th,

1:14.3

we let him go after a very quick and sudden and unexpected bout of pancreatitis, which we

1:22.0

actually know now wasn't about. He probably had it for longer than we realized. And in the end,

1:30.3

there was nothing more we could do for him. And it was very shocking and painful, and it still is.

1:36.3

In the end, it was probably pancreatic cancer, and I will be doing a podcast episode on grieving.

1:43.3

I have done one in the past when I lost my cat

1:46.6

Simon and I've talked about Schuster as well and I have been meaning to do another one and frankly

1:54.2

this is one that I will do in honor of Charlie but also because I do know that this is a universal

2:01.2

experience loss. And I am really grateful that the past episode I did on losing Simon, people have

2:10.4

told me that it really helped them through their own grief. And that is so meaningful to me.

2:14.9

So I do plan on doing another episode on grief, but not today.

2:20.0

Today, that is not this day. So thanks for all of your well wishes and sympathy and

2:25.4

kindness and compassion. I know that most of us, if we've had any loved ones, have experienced

2:31.8

loss. So I know I'm not alone.

2:35.4

And I know it's a journey and a process and I'm letting it come.

2:41.2

And it's here.
