| 0:28.7 | growing population around the world. And so they're a huge push to industrialize agriculture, |
| 0:33.6 | to produce more calories, more starchy carbohydrate calories that could feed a growing hungry world. |
| 0:39.3 | And the unintended consequence of that was two things. |
| 0:42.3 | One, producing massive amounts of sugar and starch. |
| 0:45.3 | We actually have about 500 calories more per person in America than we did in 1970. |

| 0:51.3 | Two, we also increased the amount of starch and sugar. |
| 0:57.0 | And three, we industrialized agriculture in a way that has destroyed the environment because |
| 1:01.6 | of the tillage that's destroyed the soil. |

| 1:05.0 | That is now, you know, one third of all the carbon in the atmosphere comes from the loss of |
| 1:09.0 | soil carbon, which is the life in the soil. We destroyed our rivers and waterways because of the runoff from nitrogen that's caused |
| 1:14.6 | euthification and has dead zones the size of New Jersey. |
| 1:17.6 | And in the Gulf of Mexico, there's 400 around those around the world of those that feed a half a billion people. |

| 1:24.6 | Dead zone means, you know, that when you have too much fertilizer in the water, it makes the algae |
| 1:29.0 | grow, sucks all the oxygen out of the water and all the fish die. |
