Well it's reported that 5,000 men applied for the 26 available job openings.

The question we might ask is why? Why were men enthralled by what sounds like

the promise of sheer misery over an unknown and probably long period of time? Small wages, bitter, cold, and complete darkness with a chance of death. Well, who would

willingly sign up for that? Why were so many men attracted to that opportunity?
