Summary

Visit us at shapedbydog.com    In education, what the teacher is teaching, and what the learner is learning might not be the same thing. It's the same when we are training our dogs. If what our dog does is not what we have trained, we need to look at our training to see where that might be flawed. Often it comes down to the reinforcement process, and today we're going to fix that.

In the episode you'll hear:

• The elements of the reinforcement process in dog training.
• How to fix the way you are rewarding your dog.
• About the reward process for loose leash walking.
• The reason we want to catch our dogs being amazing.
• Why to observe, recognize, mark, deliver and place reinforcement, release.
• The reason that gaps between reward elements morph behavior.
• How barking can be inadvertently rewarded.
• Why to ask yourself, "what did you just reward?".
• About being prepared for training to help your dog learn.
• The mechanics of good reward delivery.
• Why reinforcement placement builds or tears down behaviour.
• How your dog will always tell you what they are learning.

In any education process, there's what the educator is teaching and there is what the learner is learning.

0:16.9

And anybody who's ever spent any time in an algebra class knows those two are often not

0:22.5

the same thing. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett and welcome to Shape by Dog. This concept is incredibly

0:28.8

important for those of us who own and love and want well-behaved dogs because in a classroom,

0:35.6

there is what the teacher is teaching, but there's other elements

0:39.0

like how much you apply yourself doing your homework or how well you pay attention in class.

0:43.4

There's a lot of things that the teacher can put their hands on their hips and go,

0:46.7

we took this. You should know this. We took this already. And let me just share with you

0:53.2

that as a dyslexic child going through an

0:55.2

education process, just because you thought you taught it doesn't mean I was learning it,

1:01.1

sister. I can tell you that much for shizal, but I digress. Let's talk dogs because with dogs,

1:08.3

there isn't any, did you do your homework or did you pay attention.

1:13.0

It's all on us guys. It is 100% on us. If there is a distance between what we thought we

1:21.6

trained and what the dog is showing us they know, Ty doesn't go to the runner here. It all is about what the dog is demonstrating

1:31.4

because there's a flaw in the system and today I'm going to share with you how you can fix a big

1:37.5

part of that flaw. It all comes down to something called a reinforcement process and there's six, well, five elements, sometimes six.

1:47.4

It sounds like I don't know what I'm talking about. Trust me on this. I'll get to what that

1:51.5

sixth element may be. But there's for sure five elements and sometimes six elements to the

1:57.4

reinforcement process. And the vast majority of the people that I see with their dogs at the

2:05.0

park walking down the street are messing this up. And honestly, you can fix it. Just by listening

2:12.4

to this podcast, trust me, you can fix it. First, let me share with you what the reinforcement

2:17.4

process looks like. Now, let me share with you what the reinforcement process looks like.
