I'm often asked how to start a dog training plan, and no matter what the behaviour, my answer is always the same. We need to begin with the end in mind. Knowing how we want a behaviour to finish will create confidence and clarity for our dogs. We're looking at how back-chaining can bring you and your dog joy together in training.
In the episode you'll hear:
• How I taught my friend to ride a bicycle.
• Some of the behaviors people train without thinking of the end.
• Why some people say "stay, stay, stay" when teaching a sit or down.
• About putting wires on fence posts.
• The reason "keep going" does not make the end clear.
• All about the concept of back-chaining behavior.
• Why people struggle teaching duration behaviors.
• About the importance of release cues.
• Why I teach my dogs "out" to release a tug toy.
• How back-chaining triggers what we know best.
• The reason back-chaining helps people remember an agility course.
• Why to chain back to what the dog loves.

| 0:00.0 | Anytime I get asked a question, Susan, how do I start a training plan for this behavior? |
| 0:16.5 | I always answer it the exact same way. It doesn't matter what of this behavior is. |
| 0:22.6 | Today, I'm going to share with you exactly how I answer that question. And more importantly, |
| 0:27.4 | the two big reasons why it's so critical for every behavior you're trading. |
| 0:32.8 | Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shape by Dog. I'm going to start by sharing a story with you that |
| 0:39.3 | happened a couple summers ago. I had a friend who I kind of corralled into going for a bike |
| 0:44.8 | ride with me because here's the thing. When you get to be 60 years old, it gets harder and harder |
| 0:51.0 | to get people to go for a longish type bike ride with you. |
| 0:56.5 | And so I talked to a friend into going with me and she said, okay, but I haven't been bike |
| 1:00.6 | riding since I was a kid. |
| 1:01.6 | So you're going to have to help me to remember it. |
| 1:04.4 | And so what I did is we went to a parking lot and this is what I did. |
| 1:08.8 | I said, you're going to now get up on the bike and put one foot on the |
| 1:13.1 | ground and the other foot you're going to put on the pedal. Your hands are going to be on the |
| 1:18.1 | handlebars with your hands around the brakes. So you're going to do one pedal, |
| 1:23.1 | break, shift your butt off the seat and come down on your other leg. So that one leg never |
| 1:30.3 | ever got to a pedal. Put your foot up on the opposite pedal, that the leg is on the ground, |
| 1:36.5 | take a pedal, get your butt on the seat, hit the brakes, come off the seat and put that |
| 1:42.0 | foot on the floor. She wanted to be reminded how to ride a bike. |
| 1:45.0 | What the heck was I doing? I was doing the same thing. I tell everybody who wants to know |
| 1:51.0 | how they should start their dog trading planned. I was beginning with the end in mind. Because |
| 1:56.3 | what good is it if I teach her how to ride a bike if I don't teach her how to stop safely? |
