And what we're going to get into today is Nancy Pelosi and Taiwan.

Like, why is she there?

I think that's really the big question of the speaker's visit to Taiwan, which has just begun.

First of all, it is not common practice for senior U.S. government officials to visit Taiwan.

Do you know the last time a really high-ranking government official,

U.S. government official visited Taiwan?

Well, it was 1997 and the high-ranking official was Speaker Newt Gingrich.

So he goes there in 1997 and he remains.

After that trip in 1997, he remained the highest-ranking U.S. official ever to visit Taiwan

until now when Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who, like Gingrich, the Speaker of the House,

arrived in Taipei.

Okay, so this is really unusual for a Speaker of the House really, really senior U.S. official

to visit Taiwan.

Now, that is not to say that U.S. officials don't visit Taiwan.

They actually do Senator Rick Scott, the Republican from Florida, travel there in July.

I mean, just last month.
