We'd like to get right into it and what we're going to get into today

is something you might call the Washington fantasy world. A strange atmosphere,

maybe a miasma, something. Something has descended on Washington DC in the last week or so.

At the very moment, the precise moment, the government announced that the economy shrank

for the second consecutive quarter. Now, that's, as we all know, the popular definition

of a recession. At that very moment, Washington pundits began talking about what a great week

President Joe Biden was having. I mean, it just seemed so odd. And they minute sincerely,

not ironically. I mean, they weren't saying when they said he's having a really great week,

they didn't really mean he's having a disastrous week. They mean he's having a great week.

So, why was it a great week? Well, there were two reasons, according to the new conventional

wisdom. One, the Senate passed a bill that provides billions of dollars in subsidies to the

semiconductor industry. Now, depending on where you are politically here, conservatives denounced

that bill as a pork laden handout to big business. They went after the 16 Republicans in the Senate

and the 24 Republicans in the House who voted for the bill. So it was bipartisan. But conservatives

were really very upset about it. And it does seem to be just filled pork. Biden, though,

had unanimous democratic support. That tells you something about the partisan nature of the bill.
