Three minutes after ten is the time, and we are going to discuss the government's proposed solutions to the horrors and tragedies of human beings crossing the English Channel in flimsy dinghies, making themselves prey not only of course to the elements, but also to the worst elements of humanity, the people who profit and exploit this misery.

Do you think we should begin with King Lear or Donald Trump?

Just for a neat lever into this conversation, what's the best?

Why would I mention King Lear at this point? I think it's obvious why I'd

mentioned Donald Trump. It was probably not properly noted at the time. I hope we did ourselves

justice. I hope we did basic morality and common decency. I hope we did humanity justice

when Donald Trump sought to introduce the so-called Muslim ban. But that was a little

glimpse of what Nazism would look like in the 21st century. Just swap the word Muslim for Jew,

of course, and you get an indication of exactly where that particular brand of politics

came from. And remember, long after Donald Trump sought to introduce a Muslim ban, there

were plenty of politicians in Britain still singing his praises or indeed hashtagging his brilliance on their on their Twitter accounts,

sitting conservative MPs and plenty of right-wing commentators as well. People who

either held their nose as they got the whiff of fascism emerging from

that particular politician who's on the comeback trail now, or who genuinely hoovered it up,

like the most delicious aromas they had ever encountered. Don't ever forget that. That's what it

looks like, the Muslim ban. And I mentioned that in favour or in preference to King Lear,

because that's at one extreme of any conversation about immigration in general or asylum in particular.

At one extreme, there is the position that states, I don't want any.

And now, Shakespeare scholars will perhaps have a clue as to why I was thinking of mentioning King Lear.
