Summary

Ever found yourself feeling great all day, only to leave therapy feeling worse than when you arrived? You're not alone. While therapy has been tremendously helpful in my life—particularly couples therapy with my husband—I've noticed a concerning pattern that deserves honest exploration. Many therapeutic approaches keep us locked in endless loops of our past, rehashing old wounds without clear forward momentum. This isn't always helpful. As the saying goes, "a therapist keeps you on the couch...

Okay, my friends, let's talk for a moment about why I'm not in love with therapy.

0:18.7

Now, I must preface this by saying, I've enjoyed therapy a lot in the past. It's brought me a lot

0:26.3

of support and a lot of clarity. I've also written about this in my book, Let It Be Easy. Couples therapy

0:32.0

has been one of the best things my husband and I have ever done, and therapy in my history has helped me just

0:39.8

understand myself better. It's helped me lean into the parts of myself that were kind of

0:46.1

confusing to me how anxious I would sometimes feel or on how high alert I would sometimes feel.

0:54.8

That said, I never worked with a therapist for really longer than, I think, three-ish or so months

1:06.2

at a time in different periods when I needed them, I'd use them, and then I would pop in and then pop

1:13.4

out. And to me, that was perfect. So why am I breaking this down today? So look, whatever you

1:22.7

need for your own mental health, take it. I applaud any moves towards whatever it takes to take care of yourself

1:30.7

and your well-being. I'd also like to share that sometimes I don't like how therapy keeps us

1:38.8

locked in this loop of our past. You know, there's a joke that I heard at NYU when I was studying coaching there,

1:46.6

life coaching, about the difference between coaching and therapy. And it says, you know, a therapist

1:51.4

keeps you on the couch and a coach gets you off the couch, gets you moving. And that's very much

1:57.5

my spirit, living in the present, taking advantage of now, seeking opportunities,

2:03.1

creating an action plan, moving forward. I've had friends and relatives over the years who've

2:10.0

been kept in therapy for months and months and months, even years at a time, talking about the

2:15.6

past, reliving it, rehashing it. And if that works for you,

2:19.5

don't listen to me today. Tune out, move on, listen to past episodes. But I wonder, you know,

2:26.2

even when I was, say, weeks into working with a therapist, I'd be having, for example, a really

2:30.5

good day. And I was feeling good and high and I was like, oh gosh, no, 4 p.m.
