You know, what Chatchy PT is really good at is, and all these large language models ultimately are very good at, is filler, boilerplate.

0:08.5

You know, stuff that is not necessarily like a personal expression, right?

0:15.3

And I think one thing that's going to happen is you're going to see a lot more emphasis on the personal, on the intention of the author of an essay.

0:23.6

That was my education was how to do that. And Chatchy PT does really, it doesn't break into the power of the intention. It doesn't break the power of being able to make an argument.

0:34.6

But it definitely breaks like, just simply being able to put things in a paragraph, in a good structure, in a way that makes sense, right?

0:44.9

And you know, that was a very hard fought skill for me, and now you can do it with a click of a button.

1:11.9

It is my pleasure to welcome back to the podcast futurist author writer for the Atlantic. You may know him as the author of this great book, The Next Civil War.

1:21.4

My friend Steven Marsh, welcome Steven.

1:23.9

I was good to talk to you Andrew. How you doing?

1:25.9

Doing great. So we are going to Chatchy PT, which is the natural language processing app that is taking the world by storm.

1:37.4

You're something of an expert because you've been digging into this for years, since back in 2017 or even earlier.

1:46.4

Yeah, I mean, before 2017, I was sort of a skeptic of digital humanities. And one of the things that, you know, sometimes when you get skeptical, skeptical about things, you start to look into them.

1:56.4

And then you fall on the podium, but continue.

1:58.4

Yeah.

2:01.4

But you know, I was very skeptical of these metrical systems for analyzing things. And so I sort of started looking into it. And then as I looked into it, I was like, oh my God, there's some really interesting stuff happening here.

2:14.4

And you know, the first sort of, I use an algorithmic method of generating a short story for the wired in 2017.

2:22.4

And then I did another one for the MIT Tech Review. And then the transformer happened. The transformer is the technology that makes it's the T in GPT.

2:32.4

And it makes all of this stuff possible. And it's really kind of splitting the atom of language. And, you know, since then, I've been following its effects pretty closely.

2:41.4

And, and seeing sort of the, you know, the trend to me is much broader than Chatchy PT.

2:48.4

Like, Chatchy PT is the hot thing right now. You know, things that have been incredibly cool have been around for, you know, at least two or three years and sort of mind blowing.

2:59.4

It's just, you know, with Chatchy PT, the people are catching up on it. They're basically seeing it happen.

3:06.4

So, what Chatchy PT is a large language model. It's a, it's a bot that you can ask any question and it produces a coherent response to it. You have to remember that all of this stuff, all of natural language processing is simply text prediction soft. Like, that's all it is.
