Summary

Are claims that social media and technology have destroyed America warranted, or are flawed arguments driving the uproar around Big Tech? Rikki sits down with Robby Soave, author of "Tech Panic: Why We Shouldn't Fear Facebook and the Future," to discuss how issues animating both the right and the left have led to today's tech and social media ecosystem and what to do about it. I am Ricky Schlaught and Robbie is out traveling in India at the moment.

0:08.1

So I am here with Robbie, uh, Robbie Swave, who is a really respected voice in the libertarian media world.

0:15.7

Someone who quite often when I research our segments on this show, I look up like, has

0:20.4

Robbie said anything about this?

0:21.5

Because it's always a touch point for me that can check my non-libertarian tendencies a little bit.

0:28.2

But I'm excited to have him on the show, particularly because he wrote a book about a year ago called Tech Panic, which everyone will know who listens to this podcast that I am in a major

0:38.1

tech panic. But Robbie definitely takes a different point of view in saying that we should slow down

0:44.8

to just whole host dismiss social media as a terrible, awful platform that should be attacked

0:52.2

with the cudgel of the government. So that further ado,

0:55.3

I'll welcome Robbie to the show. Thanks so much for being here. Thank you for having me.

Jonathan Haute at the Soho Forum, where you discussed social media and whether the government should

1:12.3

regulate it. And I found that super interesting as somebody who obviously has some skin in the

1:17.5

game as a girl who grew up in social media. And I respect both of you a ton. And it was an

1:22.7

interesting kind of clash of viewpoints. But for listeners who aren't familiar with your work in your book,

1:29.0

can you give a kind of broad overview about what what tech panic argues? Sure. So I explored

1:35.5

all of the reasons that people are coming up with to basically regulate social media. And by tech,

1:41.7

I'm mostly specifically talking about social media platforms and

1:46.9

that sort of thing. I come from writing about speech and civil liberties, those issues. So that was

1:53.0

my interest in this. And I found it very interesting that over the years, both kind of political

1:59.9

sides, both Republicans and Democrats,
