Summary

Pentecostals believe firmly in divine healing. This belief is based on Scriptures such as James 5:14–15, which says that, if a person is sick, they should ask the elders of the church to anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord, with the expectation that God will work a miracle. In Mark 16:18, Jesus promised believers that they would lay hands on the sick and see them recover. However, personal experience shows that not everyone who receives prayer or is anointed with oil is healed. 0:42.6

James 5, 14 through 15, which says that if a person is sick, they should ask the elders of the church

0:48.0

to anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the expectation, of course, is that God will do a miracle.

0:53.7

We also frequently quote Mark

0:55.5

16, where Jesus said that those who believe on him will lay hands on the sick and that they

1:00.6

will recover. However, we know from personal experience that not everybody who gets anointed

1:07.1

with oil or is prayed for is healed. How do we reconcile that reality with what God

1:13.8

said in his word about divine healing? Let's start with the scripture, as you have already done.

1:19.5

First of all, we as Pentecostals absolutely believe that God heals. That includes physical and

1:25.2

emotional healing. That includes instantaneous healing. That includes

1:28.5

miracles of deliverance. So we must always preach and teach that. We do believe in the gifts of the

1:35.9

spirit, divine healing, and miracles. We believe that healing is in the atonement, in the sense that when

1:42.5

Jesus died for our sins and rose again,

1:45.5

he not only purchased forgiveness for our sins, but he purchased healing and wholeness for our bodies.

1:51.2

However, and here's where the issue comes, not all the benefits of the atonement are immediate.

1:58.4

For example, we still live in a sinful world. We're still

2:02.8

subject to temptations. It's possible that we could succumb to temptation and make a bad

2:07.4

choice in sin. Even though the Lord has saved us from sin, we still have that temptation.
