Summary

Are you following the truth or are you following incentives that may cause you to turn your back on Christianity and throw Jesus under the bus? On this midweek podcast episode, Frank continues the conversation on the powerful incentives that often prevent us from denying ourselves and picking up our cross for Christ as we go through our daily lives. He'll answer questions like:* What does FOMO (the fear of missing out) reveal about our underlying motivations?* Why does the question, "If Christianity were true, would you be a Christian?" often reveal a non-believer's true intentions and desires?* What did Norman Geisler mean when he said, "Fraternity will almost always overcome theology."?* What are some examples from the Bible when people follow incentives instead of following Christ?Near the end of the program, Frank addresses two listener questions related to this topic--one from an Indian American who is struggling to commit to Christianity because his family wants him to embrace his Hindu roots, and the second from a Muslim seeking clarification on some differences between the Quran and the Bible. There's no doubt that following Christ is ever an easy decision to make, and even Christians are susceptible to falling off the rails for the sake of convenience and not ruffling any feathers. But we hope this episode will encourage you no matter where you are on your journey with Jesus!Truth or Incentives? Ladies and gentlemen, are you following the truth or are you following incentives that may cause you to deny the truth?

0:12.4

That's what we're going to continue to talk about today because in the last podcast, the one that's done on the American Family Radio Network. We started our conversation on this

0:22.9

issue because it struck me that people tend to make decisions based on incentives rather than

0:31.2

truth. And I began to quote from a book by Mr. Morgan Housel. The book is called Same as Ever,

0:36.7

A Guide to What Never Changes. It's more a book about

0:38.6

investments than it doesn't have anything really to do with, as far as I know, not a Christian.

0:44.5

He's not talking about Christianity, but he is talking about human nature and how we make decisions.

0:49.6

Do you make decisions on truth and evidence or incentive? Now, I'm just going to continue our conversation

0:55.0

that we began back in the last podcast. So you'll have to go back and listen to that podcast

1:03.3

in order to pick up the thread as to where we are here. But let me just pick up our conversation

1:09.7

where we left off. We were talking at the end of the last

1:13.3

podcast about how, unfortunately, even pastors are tempted to avoid difficult, controversial issues,

1:21.4

particularly in our culture. They have to do with sex because they're incentivized to avoid them.

1:29.4

They think that, well, I can't lose people.

1:32.2

I don't want people walking out.

1:33.5

I don't want people walking out and not hearing the gospel because there's a

1:37.4

controversial issue I have to talk about that the Bible does talk about.

1:41.3

And so they're incentivized to not preach the entire word of God. And I think this is a

1:47.0

miscarriage of our responsibility as pastors, as teachers, and even as just Christians. Because as

1:56.5

you know, in Christianity, we're all priests. We're a nation of priests, according to Peter,

but there are people that make it a vocation to speak the word of God. And those people

2:08.1

especially should be preaching the entire word of God and allow people to hear the entire
