Well, when I had our first daughter, I didn't have our first daughter, when we had our first

daughter, River, my expectations were warped about what parenting would look like, what it would

feel like, what it would be the highs and lows of parenting. And I know for us, with River, particularly, our firstborn,

she struggled in the early days with getting down to sleep at night, that we would get her

ready, do her routines, do everything perfectly, and we'd find ourselves in her bedroom, in her nursery,

and I would be holding her and rocking her to sleep,

and I'd finally get her there, and I'd slowly creep over to the crib and lower her down.

And if my arm so much has flinched the wrong way, she woke up and we'd start all over again.

And it would drive me crazy.

I would just stay so much time in her room and just sitting there as she whined and as she was

grumpy and frustrated and I would say, why is this happening, God?

And it would be so upset.

And then I had a moment early on in those first few months where I had a realization that this is parenting

that if I spend 90% of the time in the not as fun stuff only looking to and waiting and

wanting the 10% of the time that I'm missing the whole point that if I spend my entire early months and days and weeks and years of her childhood,

despising what is 70% of the time, the hard stuff,

and only looking for the 30% that I'm missing out.

And I would say that the same thing is true for all of us with work, that we live in cycles of perpetual dissatisfaction. And when I say work, let me explain

this. I don't just mean a nine to five job because I'm speaking to everyone in here.
